Our Story

Hi! My name is Cali, I work as an Equine Gestaltist/Cosmetologist and am the Founder of Conscious Effects. My gift is creating experiences and holding space for people while they process their feelings and thoughts. Lending support and guidance in the process so they can move forward in their lives to be more congruent and confident in themselves. Its often our ego that gets in the way of our true spirit. The horses work with me in my gestalt practice as an active partner creating pieces of work to assist people in unlocking their full potential. Once we become more whole within ourselves we become more fulfilled and content. Our horses are our family alongside our two little boys, Hudson and Beckham. Horses bring so much positivity into our lives and have so much to teach us. I stand by them and am enjoying the journey they take us on.

Hi, My name is Slim, I have been around horses my whole life and love the process of working with them from start to finish. I work as a professional pick up man. I enjoy starting and finishing all of our own colts. Our horses are like family and are very versatile and grounded. Working from all areas including the rodeo arena, ranch and programs with people. I look forward to continuing working on horses to get them ready for others and myself to enjoy in whichever field they choose.

We live with our two son’s Hudson & Beckham at our cozy home south of Maple Creek. We raise horses and enjoy helping my parents on the family ranch. We are grateful to be able to work and create full time from our home. This has been a goal in both our visions for a long time. Raising our boys has been the biggest gift and experience for us. We love watching them grow and supporting them in what they enjoy. They have been big helpers in creating and delivering our Kid programs, helping us to think like a kid and giving us honest feedback when needed. We travel across Canada as a family with our horses for Slim to work as a Pick Up Man with Macza Pro Rodeo and Bar C5. The kids love our adventures and I love watching Slim in unison with the horses, building courage and confidence in our colts. It is a big accomplishment for the horses to go from babies to the big show with the responsibility of picking up. Every year we have new up and comers that are ready to join the A team to get the experience to add to their resume. My training in Gestalt has been a huge benefit to our success with horses, being able to gain more perspective and awareness. We are always learning and practicing to become a better horseman and person, as you may know, that is a never ending journey. We are so grateful to be able to have horses in our lives and bring different experiences to others to spread the joy and give back.

If you are looking for a horse to bring into your life as a companion, working or pleasure horse, contact us. We are constantly working with our young stuff as they grow up and each horse has a different path. Reach out and we will see if we have a horse for you.

Our Growing Journey

Our horses have always been our best friends and most trusted support. They have helped us through the toughest times in our lives and have been their in the best times. During our journey rodeoing with our horses Slim and I met. The horses continue bringing us closer, helping us grow through daily lessons. We find raising children and horses is much the same as far as constant self awareness and balancing between nurturing and boundaries. I am very grateful for the way our life is always changing and guiding us. The biggest lesson I have learned and continue to learn is that the love you have for yourself (spirit) will transform your whole life! Love is a rippling effect. It starts with yourself, growing like a garden. Blossoming the more you nurture and water it, pruning when needed. Horses are the most efficient and honest teachers for self awareness. I am honored to have my gestalt training to work with horses and deepen people’s healing processes. Slim and I are very passionate and determined in life. We are grateful for what we have learned and enjoy being present in the process as we continue to unravel our full potential!

Our Horses

Most of our horses have been with us since babies. The connection and relationship we have with them is like family. Our trust and communication with them continues to evolve, allowing us to understand and meet their individual needs. This connection will assist me in the Equine Gestalt work to readily communicate what our horses are trying to express.  The lifestyle we provide for our horses through rodeo and ranching provides them with a wealth of experiences, making them ideal for clients to work with and or ride.  They are full of love and respect and are ready to serve and heal.

Barn Name: Rosie

Registered Name: SUGARSWEETROSIE
Born: May 9/2011

Rosie is our toughest, most observant mare. She has grown into the alpha mare. We bought her as a weanling from my brother-in-law, she is out of our family Stud “THE SUGAR TREE” who has passed. She is a beautiful buckskin mare that is very honest and gives you her whole heart. She is a horse that calls your bluff when you are not consistent or clear in what you are asking. She has taught my husband to be more gentle, clear and patient with his training when she was younger. Rosie is also a highly skilled pick-up horse and used to work with my husband in the rodeo arena and help on the family ranch. Rosie is a great healing partner, she watches closely and helps people balance their energies while pulling the negative energy off of them. She strives for congruence in the human. She has suffered an injury and is now stepping into the next part of her life of being a mom. We are in love with her latest colt, “Lizzard” who is a beautiful buckskin stud colt that resembles his mom in many ways.

Barn Name: Lizzard

Registered Name: SC HECKOFASUGARTREE
Born: April 28/2022

Lizzard is our first foal out of our mare Rosie and Beierbach’s Beautiful palomino stud “RNJ HECKOFAFRENCHMAN.” He is such a handsome big fella and has a curious yet distant personality so far just like his mom did. He loves to play and cause mischief but when he is saddled he is strictly business. He has been the quickest horse to catch onto training. Slim says, “He just knows.” He has been started and done some ranch jobs, sorting and trailing and has had a rope swung on him. We are so thrilled to have to him in our life. He is enrolled in the Legends Of The Prairie, Royal Crown, The Breeders Elite and Western Fortunes.

Barn Name: Eddie

Registered Name: TYPICAL EDDIE
Born: May 8, 2014

Eddie is our prince. He is the first horse Slim and I raised together. Eddie is the son and only offspring of our old bay mare, “Moolah”.  Eddie’s dad was our old stud “THE SUGAR TREE” who has passed on. Rosie and Sophia are both half siblings to Eddie, all out of Sugar. I call him our gift horse, as he is the perfect fit for our family. He is named after my late Grandpa, Ed Yarshenko, as he had originally brought the racing quarter horse “THE OLD OAK TREE” bloodlines up from the states in the late 60’s. After Eddie’s birth we tried to get Moolah bred again for the next 4 years and could not, we then learned that her original owner tried as well and had no luck, another reason why he is such a gift! He has always been an old soul that values fairness, truth and safety. He was very easy to start, and gets along with everyone in the herd. He stands up for himself but doesn’t cause any drama. We can always count on Eddie to look after our boy Hudson (steady Eddie) and help with the kids programs. He has been a lot of fun to head off of and barrel race on. He is strong and fast in the head box and runs in the 1D in the barrels. He does not love picking up, only once and awhile so we honor that in him and he mainly works as a judge horse at the rodeos. They love when we bring Eddie as they know he is safe and they can do their job without any troubles. We are grateful to have Eddie in our life and really appreciate all of who he is.

BARN NAME: SOPHIA

Registered Name: SUGARS SOPHIA GRACE
Born : May 20, 2010

Sophia is a kind, loyal and strong mare that we raised. She is a full sister to “Rosie” the buckskin, and half sister to “Eddie” the grey gelding. We started and sold Sophia as a 3 year old thinking we had enough horses. We bought her back as an 8 year old for Slim, and they went right to work picking up. Her spirit had not changed, she is so steady and willing. She has done some healing work with clients at the retreat and been a horse for the guests to ride. I love riding her ranching as she feels so strong pulling calves at branding. She is for sure one of our most reliable horses. We are so grateful for her and have recently retired her from picking up. She has now joined the broodmare string! We are so excited to meet her baby and watch her be a mom.

BARN NAME: POGO

Registered Name: MM COGDELL SUNFROST
Born: May 6, 2011

Pogo is Slim’s main Pick Up Horse. He is like the big dog that thinks he is little and wants to sit on your lap. My dad bought him from the NAERIC Barrels Of Cash Sale in Brandon, Manitoba. He was a tiny colt that cost less then a meal out for our family. Dad dropped him off at Slim and I’s place as a barrel prospect , now he is 1400 pounds and a warrior Pickup Horse. Pogo and Rosie grew up together and are the same age. He has a very friendly caring spirit. He is the oldest gelding on the place , therefore he is the boss without a question. He protects his herd as well as his family “us.” The older Pogo gets the more chill he gets. He helps us with our events, supporting people with his big friendly presence and has recently blown us away with his offerings in the Equine Gestalt work with clients.

BARN NAME: Pretty

Born : 2002

We bought Pretty in the summer of 2021 for the kids. Pretty is a horse that works amazing but doesn’t give it to the kids, they have to work for it which has been great for their horsemanship. Beckham and his spirit really connected with her so they are a team. He has no fear with her and they do all sorts of things together. She keeps up all day with the big horses and I am so grateful we have her, she is our babysitter for Beckham.

BARN NAME: Hawk

Registered Name: CROSS BAR MIDNIGHT
Born: May 18, 2019

Hawk I picked up at the Cross Bar Production Sale in Swift Current, SK as a weanling. He was the high seller and I had to have him. He has really grown up into a beautiful black gelding. Slim has worked pasture with him, slacks at rodeos, ranched and team roped off of him. His 5 year old year we introduced him to his first performances picking up. He was outstanding and never changed all year. He is so chill and takes things in stride. We are getting to see another side of him with his sense of humor. He is such a character. He also showed up as a beautiful support for our kids horse camp and let the kids feel safe as they learned to ride on him. He is such a blessing we enjoy having him in the family.

BARN NAME: dallas

Registered Name: DNA SKIPIOS TINY JET
Born: May 10, 2015

We bought Dallas as a weanling from DNA Quarter Horses. We seen a picture of her on Facebook and thought she looked like a nice little filly. Alanna had done a lot of ground work with her as a baby so she was really quiet when we got her and still shows that nature. She was one of our main horses to help with the Long Term Care Program , where 8 senior residents that suffered from mild to medium dementia came out to our place to engage with the horses once a week for 2 hours for 6 weeks. Dallas stood so quiet and brought her energy down so low to help soothe the residents. She was only 4 years old at that time. I am very grateful for her and the support she gives to us. Slim has picked up on her and she works! She is athletic, tough and caring. She has become one of my rock star healing partners. She always blows me away as she embodies the work and the pain the client is dealing with. The guests love riding her at the Healing Hills Retreat, and the kids also felt really safe with her at our Kids program. We are so grateful for her commitment and what she offers. She is the horse we put the judges and the rodeo queens on when they need a horse at the rodeo. We got Dallas bred this Spring to “An Awsome Force.” We cant wait to meet her precious baby, she is going to be a great mom!

BARN NAME: Sonic

Registered Name: CAPTIAN FINAL CORONA
Born: May 19, 2023

Sonic we bought from, Justin Miller as a weanling. He is off his stud, VP FINAL CORONA and his mare, MJ CAPTAINS LENA. He is quiet a nature. Slim has put the first few rides on him as a long yearling. He will be gelded and kicked out to grow and be a horse. We look forward to getting to know him more. He is enrolled in the Legends Of The Prairie and Breeders Elite incentive programs.

BARN NAME: Moolah

Registered Name: Typical Rebel
Born: May 18, 1999

Moolah is the senior of our herd and Mother to “Eddie” and has been around the longest. She was such a cool powerful barrel horse that my sisters and I got to experience at the end of her career. Slim and I bought Moolah off my dad for a broodmare after she couldn’t barrel race anymore. Slim got to pick up a couple rodeos on her. She was so fast and strong he loved her. She was the first big horse our kids learned to ride on their own. She gave them safety and let them relax and have fun. She is the most trustworthy and loyal horse for our Kids Horse Camp and the guests at the Healing Hills Retreat. She plays the grandma role to any foals we have around the place, keeping them safe and in line. Right now she is giving her love to another little girl who is new in the industry showing her how great it is to have a horse. We love Moolah!

BARN NAME: Chip

Registered Name: Cross Bar Dingo
Born: June 15, 2018

When I was pregnant with our first son Hudson, my dad bought him a colt from the Cross Bar Production Sale, in Swift Current, SK. He was an adorable little chestnut off a handsome stud with a beautiful bald face. The colt ended up colicking and dying the first month we owned him. Dad and I went back to the same sale 4 years later to get more colts off that same stud. We learned from the owner that the stud had died and there were no colts off him at the sale we were at. He said they had some long yearlings out of that stud, at their house. Two weeks later Slim, Dad, Hudson and I traveled 5 hours to his place and brought home “Chip.” We looked and looked but I felt pulled towards him, I do not question my gut anymore and follow my instincts when choosing horses. We are grateful to have him in our family. He is a very energetic, athletic horse that is very tough. He is an all day horse with a lot of speed! He is a proven Proffesional Pickup Horse. During his whole 5 year old season picking up, he never took a wrong step. One announcer would comment and laugh about Slim on his pony when they rode into the arena. The thing is Chip didn’t know he was small. He has a huge heart and seems to know how to go with the bucking horses and negotiate to get them to do what is needed. He gets along with all the horses in the herd and never causes problems. I love watching Slim and him work together as they are so united. After watching Chip have so much fun picking up I wanted to see what he would think of the barrels. He learned the barrel pattern in 2 weeks because of his willingness, foundation and intelligence. He is now running in the 1D and is a blast to run as I know he will do his job. He was not an easy horse to start with his sensitivity level and high energy. I am so grateful for Slim and Chips efforts to get where they are now. We both love Chip! He is our fun horse that brings the inner child out in us.

BARN NAME: Cowboy Ninja (SOLD)

Born: June 2020

Cowboy Ninja was a surprise just like many things in 2020. Her mom “Yang” (a mare we sold in 2023), accidentally got bred to one of my dads bucking horse studs as a yearling. So here she is now, the mustang looking cow horse offspring! The kids love Cowboy Ninja and took pride in naming her. Slim has started her and said she is the nicest horse he has started, so chill and so eager to learn and please. She loves to work and meets him at the gate. Long days do not scare her or wear her out. She is loyal, willing and expressive.

BARN NAME: Lady

Registered Name: Cross Bar Cali
Born: May 2, 2019

Lady of course caught my eye as a weanling because of her beauty and grace (hence her name). She is from the Cross Bar Production sale, same crop as “Hawk.”  I liked her for Slim as he likes a bigger horse. I had never bid on a horse at an auction till I had just bought “Hawk.” I panicked and didn’t put my hand up for Lady. My dad ended up bidding for her (very sneaky that I didn’t even know, sitting right beside him.) I felt foolish that I didn’t raise my hand as soon as they closed the gate behind her. I then realized dad was the buyer. Before we left the auction, I had bought her off dad. Her and Hawk have been raised at our home, it has been fun watching them grow up. She has since been started and done lots of ranch work with Slim and I. She worked the Millie pasture her 4 year old year and worked slacks at rodeos. Her 5 year old year she was introduced to picking up. That spring she was a hair overwhelmed by it, by summer she was settled in and by fall she was laid back to almost a flaw about it. Slim has done some heeling off of her in the practice pen, she is very chill and honest about it. It was nice this season to watch her work through dealing with pressure. She has become a jump on and go horse that we can both enjoy.

Happy Clients
